Speed and Accuracy Are Vital for Quality Internal Investigations

In an article published on October 17, 2024, in Bloomberg Law, AGG partner and Emerging Technologies co-chair, Allison Raley, discussed the importance of internal investigations and how businesses can ensure their investigations are well structured.

Allison explained that the recent launch of the Department of Justice Corporate Whistleblower Awards Program gives businesses more reason to act quickly, as the program incentivizes companies to investigate and self-report violations. Doing so protects companies from escalating legal or regulatory consequences and can halt misconduct and prevent further damage before it becomes a larger issue.

There are a few key steps to a strong internal investigation, Allison wrote, including independence, confidentiality, thorough documentation, and speed and accuracy. If problems are found, they should be presented along with potential solutions to the issues.

“In the long run, committing to self-regulation and improvement fosters a culture of compliance that protects the company and strengthens its reputation as a trusted and accountable organization,” Allison concluded.
