Smart Cybersecurity Strategies to Protect Against Breaches
In an article published on October 2, 2024, in Innovation & Tech Today, AGG Privacy & Cybersecurity attorneys Jackie Cooney and Erin Doyle discussed the rising risks facing streaming services related to cybersecurity breaches and the theft of intellectual property (IP).
Jackie and Erin highlighted the August 2024 Netflix IP breach, which led to leaked footage of several unreleased TV shows and movies. The attorneys highlighted key threats facing entertainment platforms, including ransomware attacks where IP is stolen; major financial impact of IP breaches; and the ability for cyber criminals to gain access to algorithms, software code, and even business information like potential M&A activity.
To help mitigate this major risk, Jackie and Erin laid out the framework of proper cybersecurity practices by providing insight into how companies should protect IP within their systems, respond to an incident if it occurs, and ensure vendors are appropriately protecting the IP they have access to.
“This latest data breach affecting Netflix’s postproduction vendor should serve as a reminder to streaming services — and all companies — to shore up the protection of intellectual property both in their possession and in the possession of their service providers,” Jackie and Erin advised.
