Kevin Bell Quoted in NutraIngredients Article on FTC Probe of Social Media and Video Streaming Platforms
Kevin Bell, co-chair of AGG’s Intellectual Property practice and Dietary Supplements industry team, was quoted in a NutraIngredients article titled “Industry on Notice as FTC Probes Social Media, Video Streaming Platforms.” The article discusses the Federal Trade Commission’s (“FTC”) call out of disease prevention ads, weight-loss products, and MLMs, as it investigates the inner workings of social media and its function in deceptive online advertising.
Kevin shared that these types of FTC actions are putting on notice industries that provide products and services in the areas of weight loss, COVID-19, substance abuse, and more.
“Dietary supplement companies cannot be vigilant enough right now regarding the advertising content and strategies they employ to market and sell products and services. With the amount of social media and influencers used in the supplement industry, it increases their potential liability,” said Bell. “The FTC will collect enormous amounts of data, analyze it, and then launch significant enforcement actions. This is what the agency is made for — and they don’t hesitate to pull the trigger.”
