In Memoriam:
William "Bill" Kitchens
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Kitchens, an esteemed member of our firm and a prominent figure in the field of food and drug law. Bill was a retired partner who left a lasting mark on Arnall Golden Gregory LLP (AGG) through his exemplary service and leadership.
A Distinguished Career
Bill’s career was nothing short of remarkable. Bill joined AGG out of the University of Georgia School of Law in 1973 and practiced at the firm for the next 50 years. He served as the firm’s managing partner from 1996 to 2008, a period during which AGG experienced significant growth and solidified its reputation as a leader in the Atlanta legal community. His leadership extended to his role as chair of the Healthcare and Life Sciences practice, where he guided the practice with vision and integrity.
Bill’s legal expertise was centered on food and drug law, where he became a trusted advisor to companies in the food, medical device, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. His counsel was sought on a wide range of critical issues, from FDA approvals of new products to post-approval safety requirements, recalls, and crisis management. He had a profound ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes, including those involving the FDA, FTC, DEA, EPA, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Notably, he served as general counsel for the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association for 25 years and was set to be honored as a member of the Frozen Food Hall of Fame this year.
Bill was also an outstanding environmental lawyer and founded AGG’s Environmental practice, working on both the regulatory and litigation sides of that practice.
Throughout his career, Bill was not only a legal practitioner but also an educator and author. He published numerous books and articles on food and drug law, sharing his extensive knowledge with the broader legal community. For 40 years, Bill was an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Law, where he inspired and mentored generations of law students.
A Legacy of Leadership and Integrity
Bill’s legacy at AGG is characterized by his dedication to excellence, his unwavering commitment to his clients, and his leadership within the firm. He was known for his sharp legal mind, his meticulous attention to detail, and his ability to handle the most challenging issues with grace and skill. His work in defending clients in administrative hearings and enforcement actions was particularly noteworthy, as he consistently delivered favorable outcomes in complex, high-stakes situations.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a mentor, a teacher, and a friend to many. He was also an accomplished fly fisherman, an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and a beloved husband and father. His generosity with his time and knowledge left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working with him.
“Bill meant so much to so many people in the greater Atlanta community, and his impact on AGG cannot be overstated” said Sean P. Fogarty, AGG’s current managing partner. “He brought class, compassion, intellect and humor to the firm every day for half a century and our organization will benefit from the culture Bill helped create for years to come. He will be deeply missed.”
